Senior Center 

 

 

The Northwest Federated Woman’s Club of Broward County, Inc. (NWFWC) is a 501(c)(3) designated organization that owns and operates the Sylvia L. Poitier and Theodora S. Williams Senior Center (PWSC) located at 2185 Northwest Nineteenth Street in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. NWFWC aims to serve the citizens of Broward County through the administration of programs and services offered at the PWSC and the Irma E. Allen Adult Day Care Center (ADCC). Services are primarily offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. These programs and services are made possible by external funding through government grants, private insurance, and private pay in addition to organizational fundraising and donations. As a nonprofit organization, the NWFWC appreciates donations of goods, services, funds, and time commitments.

Our Services

This section alphabetically lists the programs and services offered at the Poitier-Williams Senior Center (PWSC) and the Irma E. Allen Adult Day Care Center (ADCC).

The Adult Day Care service is a structured program of activities designed to meet the needs of older adults with functional impairments including cognitive and physical impairments. This service consists of assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), recreation, nutrition, and transportation. Therapeutic activities are intended to promote, maintain, and enhance the participants’ multiple dimensions of wellness - physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental.

The Center provides opportunities for participants and community members to receive relevant information on various topics including public and private services, safety and preparedness, health & wellness, and technical or occupational skills.

Respite

The Center provides care to functionally impaired older adults in the facility to provide relief or rest for a primary caregiver from constant supervision and care.

Assurance

The Center communicates with homebound and/or isolated participants and Broward County seniors to determine their safety, well-being, or to provide assistance.

PWSC-sponsored breakfast is provided daily to all Senior Center participants. The PWSC indirectly provides lunch by coordinating with the meal service provider, FLIPANY, to offer congregate meals to eligible Senior Center participants.

Shopping Assistance

PWSC staff provides assistance to eligible participants with travelling to and from stores or by shopping on behalf of the participant.

Case Management

Case Management is a support service provided to eligible ADCC participants to address their changing needs. PWSC staff assists participants in identifying their needs, developing a plan for services to address those needs, coordinating agreed upon services, and monitoring the effectiveness of the services.

The Center provides opportunities for participants to engage in activities of interest and calendared events. These activities are intended to increase physical and mental stimulation, prevent isolation, and encourage socialization.

Transportation

The Center provides transportation to and from the PWSC, participants’ residences, field trip destinations, appointments, shopping destinations, social activities, and other community services and resources.
